Movie Premiere June 22: ‘The Underground Railroad in Metamora’

May 26, 2025

The Metamora Association for Historic Preservation is proud to host a movie premier about the Underground Railroad in Metamora on June 22, 2025 at 3:00 pm. The event will be held at the Kenneth H. Maurer Performing Arts Center in Metamora High School at 101 W Madison in Metamora, Illinois.

'The Underground Railroad in Metamora,' is a gripping film that brings to life the courage, resilience, and hope of Metamora friends and neighbors who fought for freedom for Freedom Seekers.

The involvement of Metamora and its surrounding community in the Underground Railroad is a significant, yet largely unknown, aspect of Central Illinois history.  Prior to assuming the presidency, Abraham Lincoln defended local “conductors” from Metamora. This issue ultimately pitted neighbors versus neighbors, and the potential for financial gain from capturing freedom seekers made Metamora a dangerous place. This documentary aims to preserve the stories of Metamora’s crucial role during this contentious period in American history for future generations.

The film was directed, produced, and edited by Levi Obery. It was produced in conjunction with Ten Thirty-One Pictures Foundation, Illinois Humanities, and the The Metamora Association for Historic Preservation.

The feature movie will last approximately one hour with a Q&A session to follow.
