Mahomet

Situated on an easy place to ford the Sangamon River, Mahomet was home to several taverns that Abraham Lincoln frequented while traveling the eighth Judicial circuit from 1841 to 1859.  He dined here at the home of his friend B.F. Harris, cattle rancher and banker, before heading east to Urbana for Champaign County court proceedings.

To delve further into Mr. Lincoln’s connections in Mahomet and Champaign County visit the Museum of the Grand Prairie’s permanent exhibit, “Lincoln’s Champaign County.” The museum’s Discovering Home exhibit is all hands-on, and gives kids a great idea of life on the prairie. National Parks passport stamps are issued here and waysides provide rubbings here too!

Today Mahomet is a thriving community. Just north of the bustling town the Museum of the Grand Prairie is situated in the 900 acre Lake of the Woods County Forest Preserve with miles of walking trails, fishing, a Botanical Garden and the Lake of the Woods Golf Course.
