Finding the Antislavery Lincoln in Art

Professor Peck will analyze four original art works made for the University of Illinois Springfield Making Our History: Artists Render Lincoln’s Legacies exhibit in 2022. He will explain the historical background behind the paintings, and show how they reflect Lincoln’s powerful antislavery convictions and policies.

Graham A. Peck is the Wepner Distinguished Professor of Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois Springfield. His scholarship has focused on antebellum Illinois, and particularly on the careers of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. He is the author of Making an Antislavery Nation: Lincoln, Douglas, and the Battle over Freedom, which received the 2018 Russell P. Strange Memorial Book of the Year Award from the Illinois State Historical Society and was a finalist for the 2018 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
