Abraham Lincoln and the Matson Slave Case Revisited

One of the most famous cases Abraham Lincoln handled during his 25-year legal career involved the runaway slave Jane Bryant. It is well known because the antislavery Lincoln represented the slaveowner Robert Matson. John Lupton and Dr. Samuel Wheeler will discuss the case in detail and why it continues to interest historians.

John Lupton is the Executive Director of the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission. Samuel Wheeler is the Director of History Programs for the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission.
